History
Founded on February 1, 2002
TAPS was created from the desire to partner high school girls and their parents in community volunteerism. Founded by Melanie Knoth English and co-founded by Christy Deibert, Robson English, Rhonda Montgomery, and Cindy Sakai, on February 25, 2002, TAPS welcomed seventeen teens and their parents as Charter Members. TAPS has grown to sixty-seven (67) teens and a Sustainer/alumnae group.
Our Mission Statement: Teen and Parents Service Society (TAPS) is an organization of high school girls and parents committed to promoting volunteerism through effective action and leadership. Its purpose is exclusively educational, service-oriented, and charitable. TAPS reaches out to high school girls and parents of all races, religions, and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and a commitment to volunteerism.
Our TAPS program exposes teens to a variety of service opportunities. Over the course of four high school years, our teen members will be trained and participate in several areas of service: animal therapy, environmental, children/teens, senior citizens, and social welfare. Teens develop a variety of leadership skills through the planning, implementation of projects and activities, making items to donate, organizing food/clothing drives, leadership positions, and working in the community with other non-profit agencies. "April's Angels" is our annual workday at the Love-A-Child Missions Homeless Recovery Shelter-an 80-bed shelter for women and children. JUMPIN! is an optional 6-week summer program. It includes high school boys. Teens teach water safety and basic swimming skills to children at a local homeless shelter. The TAPS volunteer commitment is a minimum of twenty (20) service hours per school year.
Each year TAPS continues its commitment to reach out to people in need. It is an exciting opportunity for teens and parents to work together in volunteeris... making a difference in the lives of others.
